After Bill Protecting the Right to Contraception Passes with Bipartisan Support, Governor Lombardo Vetoes Late At Night, No Explanation

Despite overwhelming public support for contraception, which most American families use, states across the country are threatening our right to contraception (e.g., birth control pills, IUDs).

That’s why Republicans and Democrats in the Nevada state legislature joined together to pass the Right to Contraception Act. This bill would have guaranteed the right to basic contraception – like the pill, IUDs, and condoms -- for all Nevadans.

Governor Lombardo said he hoped to see bipartisan support, and that is what he got. Fellow leaders in Nevada’s GOP, Senate Minority Leader Gansert and Assistant Minority Leader Buck, voted for securing our right to contraception. But Governor Lombardo vetoed the bill late on a Friday night with no explanation.

Governor Lombardo is just another example in a long line of extremists coming after this right.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas could not have been more explicit about his support to overturn the constitutional right to contraception when he called on the court to reconsider the right to contraception.

Last year, 195 House Republicans voted against the “Right to Contraception Act.” This June, Republicans in the U.S. Senate once again blocked the federal “Right to Contraception Act,” legislation, which would have codified the right to contraception in federal law.

Governor Lombardo’s veto puts the fundamental rights of Nevadans vulnerable to state or court-led attacks on contraception and jeopardizes their access to essential healthcare services.

"Governor Lombardo’s veto is more than disappointing, it is potentially dangerous. Nevada had an opportunity to be proactive in protecting the right to contraception, and though access to contraception is supported by the citizens of Nevada as well as the legislature, he refused to sign it into law," said Rev. Dr. Mari Larson.
